Summary: The theory of 'Two-Sided' Telecoms Business Models is becoming increasingly well known. The Telco 2.0 initiative "Use Case" research project (introduced here) is analysing both actual and potential practical examples in greater detail.
Over the last 3 years, the Telco 2.0 initiative has developed '2-sided' business model thinking across the telecoms industry – helping 'upstream' industries to interact more effectively with 'downstream' telco customers.
Through commentary, events and research, the Telco 2.0TM Initiative has built a strong following behind this $375bn growth opportunity. Our ongoing dialogue with partners and subscribers has highlighted their desire to move from "discovery" and "discussion" of high-level concepts, to more detailed, practical guidance on implementation.
While continuing to refine the core concepts and introduce these to new audiences, the Telco 2.0TM research and events programme for 2009/10 is therefore focusing more on practical examples of the implementation of new business models from three sources:
These Use Cases and Case Studies will be documented in a new 100+ page Telco 2.0 Strategy Report "The 'Two-Sided' Business Model Case Directory" and presented and discussed at our forthcoming Telco 2.0 Executive Brainstorm Events. (Report format: 100+ pages manuscript, please email to pre-order and for further details, or call +44 (0) 207 247 5003. )
Telco 2.0 'Use cases' are detailed "business level" descriptions of illustrative commercial models for new Telco 2.0 B2B platform services:
The Use Cases provide:
The Use Cases provide "business level" descriptions of Telco2.0 B2B services, emphasising the experience from both an end user and upstream user perspective. The focus is on setting out the commercial model needed to succeed. The Use Cases are not intended to be technical specifications, but they will cover key technical considerations too.
Our method follows a cycle of research and validation through internal and external reviews. This approach seeks to bridge the Telco2.0 vision with practical implementation of concrete services.
The examples featured will cover a range of Telco 2.0 example applications.
Because many of the Telecoms market examples are in early-life or at this stage confidential it is valuable to look at examples and lessons from adjacent markets.
NB: An analysis of Google's strategy will be published in a separate Executive Briefing, also available via the Telco 2.0 Executive Briefing Subscription Service. There's more background in the slideshow below on the project and the scale of the 'two-sided' telecoms market opportunity.
These Use cases and Case Studies will be featured in a new Telco 2.0 Report, to be published in November 2009.
The Report will be an essential reference for CxOs, Strategists, programme leaders, product managers, commercial managers and all those responsible for creating new value through business model and value proposition innovation across the telecoms industry and in adjacent markets.
